Words of Life – Pt 2

But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You alone have the words of eternal life.” John 6:68

Peter is demonstrating his understanding that unless Jesus speaks the words that direct and uphold  life, we perish and we have no hope, no future.  Life and death, mercy and judgment are in the power of His tongue (Prov 18:21). The worlds are framed by His words. In fact, they came into existence by His spoken word. So, also, my life and existence is initiated, sustained, moved by His words. I awoke this morning because God said “awake” (Isaiah 50:4). The breath I just took was because He said “breathe”. After all, He upholds ALL things by the word of His power.  In Him who is the Word we live, move, and have our being (Acts 17:28).

Just as He did for Peter (Luke 22:32), Jesus continually makes intercession on my behalf. It is because of His requests for mercy that I am sheilded from the attacks of the enemy and from God’s judgment. The cross was the ultimate form of intercession, but Jesus our high priest never and will never stop making intercession for us.

But just as His word creates and upholds, it will also, at the appointed time, judge and destroy.  It was a much more mature Peter who continued to confess the power of the word of God:

They deliberately forget that God made the heavens by the word of his command, and he brought the earth out from the water and surrounded it with water. And by the same word, the present heavens and earth have been stored up for fire. They are being kept for the day of judgment, when ungodly people will be destroyed. 2 Pet 3:6-7

His Word …Creates:

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Jn 1:1-5

He had in His right hand seven stars, out of His mouth went a sharp two-edged sword… Rev 1:16

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.  Hebrews 4:12
